Management of Dizziness, Balance and Equilibrium

This is an exercise based approach for treatment of dizziness and balance problems.  Our vestibular system includes parts of the inner ear, and the parts of the brain that process balance.  It controls our ability to stay balanced when upright, and to stabilize our eye movements.

 SYMPTOMS OF VESTIBULAR DYSFUNCTION

•          vertigo (a sensation of the room spinning)

•          a feeling of moving when at rest

•          nausea

•          dizziness

•          motion sensitivity

•          blurry or double vision, light sensitivity

•          noise sensitivity

•          imbalance

•          hearing changes

CONDITIONS THAT CAN BE IMPROVED WITH PHYSIOTHERAPY

•          jaw symptoms, or TMJ problems

•          Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

•          vestibular neuritis

•          labyrinthitis

•          inner ear infection

•          post traumatic vertigo (after head trauma or car accident)

Conditions that CAN'T be improved by physiotherapy:

•          dizziness from cardiovascular disease

•          vertebral artery insufficiency

•          medication induced dizziness

•          postural hypotension

•          auditory system dysfunction

•          visual system dysfunction

It is possible that you may have a treatable vestibular condition along with one of these.

WHAT WILL YOUR PHYSIOTHERAPIST DO?

•          take a detailed history of your symptoms

•          do a physical examination, including observing posture, how you move and
walk, and how your eyes adjust to movement

•          many specific tests are performed to find the cause of your symptoms

TREATMENT MAY INCLUDE:

•          appropriate Vestibular Rehabilitation exercises

•          gait (walking) retraining

•          general exercise, if you have been less active because of your  symptoms
